Portraits of Oregon - Mira
Mira’s Story
I was born at home, in a small town called Stinson Beach, outside of San Francisco. My parents moved us to Thailand when I was 3 (5 kids). It was mostly a lot of fun and full of adventure. But also wild because my parents were hippies, and we traveled a lot. When I was 13, my father went to prison and that changed everything. Things were incredible hard for the remainder of my childhood.
I don't really identify fully with any racial group, or socioeconomic, for that matter. I have experienced vast diversity in own my life, so I pretty much see the world as wildly diverse. If anything, I feel a sense of 'home' with other people who are both biologically & culturally mixed. It's always a treat and so fun, when I do meet people who match that. I can't really imagine a world without diversity.
If our politics and media would stop plotting us against each other, I think that humanity's sense of curiosity and comradery would rise to the surface organically. For us to discover that most people around the world pretty much want the same things: food, water, safety, family, love, self expression & freedom. I think we all need to chill out and be less offended. People are rarely ignorant out of spite. Usually, they just don't know what they don't know. So be open to conversation. That means sharing about your culture, and also actually listening to other experiences and points of view.
