Portraits of Oregon - Jimmie

Black History.” - Jimmie Ray Berguin.

Born in Louisiana, Jimmie Ray’s life has been a front-row seat to history, shaped by the social and cultural movements that have defined generations. Growing up in the South during the Civil Rights era, he witnessed the struggle for equality firsthand. Later, his move to California placed him at the heart of pivotal moments in American history, from the racial tensions of the L.A. riots to seeing Tupac filming a music video in Compton. Along the way, he even had the honor of shaking Muhammad Ali’s hand and working as a roadie for the legendary B.B. King - testaments to his deep rooted connection to Black history.

A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Jimmie’s journey took a new chapter when he met his wife Blanca, who had immigrated from El Salvador. Her passion and heritage added another beautiful thread to his story.

Together, they built a family and eventually settled in Oregon, where he has remained ever since. Known for his big personality and magnetic charm, he possesses an effortless ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Jimmie is a true social butterfly—someone who can strike up a conversation with anyone and make them feel like an old friend.

A man of deep faith, Jimmie’s spirituality forms the foundation of his life, guiding his values and interactions. Fashion is his canvas for self-expression, a reflection of both his cultural pride and creative individuality. As a lifelong fan of Prince, his love for artistry, rhythm and music is evident in everything he does.

Above all, Jimmie Ray is committed to passing down a legacy of knowledge, pride, and resilience to his children and grandchildren. “All Black everything” isn’t just a saying—it’s a responsibility, a celebration, and a legacy.

With an unwavering focus on the richness of Black culture, history, Black excellence, Black identity, and his own personal experiences, he ensures that the stories of the past continue to inspire the future.

Jimmie Ray is proud to share this experience and be featured with his only son, Jimmie Matthew, his daughter in law Meg, and his grandchildren Charlotte and James. He invites you to see a small glimpse of his world through a lens.
